A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
